Construction Types

  • Think classic American cabinetry. Framed construction adds a solid wood “face frame” to the front of the cabinet box—about 1½ inches wide. Doors and drawers attach to this frame, so you see a slim border around each opening.

Overlay, in plain English: it’s how much of the frame the door covers.

    • Partial overlay leaves some of the frame showing.

    • Full overlay covers almost all of it for a cleaner look—similar to frameless—but with the strength of a frame behind it.

    Pros 👍

    • Strong and sturdy: The face frame adds rigidity, helping cabinets stay square through shipping and install.

    • Works with many styles: Perfect for traditional, transitional, and farmhouse looks; the visible frame adds depth.

    • Forgiving to install: The frame can help disguise small wall or floor imperfections.

    • Lots of hinge choices: From fully concealed to decorative exposed hinges.

    Cons 👎

    • Slightly smaller openings: The frame narrows the opening a bit, which can make loading bulky items trickier.

    • A touch less drawer space: Drawer boxes must be a bit narrower to clear the frame.

  • Frameless—or “full access”—cabinets skip the face frame altogether. Doors and drawers mount directly to the cabinet box with concealed hinges, creating tight, consistent gaps and a sleek, modern vibe.

    Pros 👍

    • Max storage, easy access: No frame means wider openings and more usable space.

    • Bigger drawers: Drawer boxes can span nearly the full cabinet width.

    • Clean, contemporary look: Crisp lines and minimal reveals suit modern and minimalist designs.

    • Easy to wipe down: Smooth, continuous surfaces simplify cleaning.

    Cons 👎

    • Precision matters: Cabinets must be installed perfectly plumb and level; there’s no frame to hide misalignment.

    • Box strength is key: Without a frame, durability depends on the cabinet box construction.

  • Inset is a premium take on framed construction. Doors and drawer fronts sit inside the face frame, flush with the cabinet front. It’s a beautiful, furniture-like look that requires careful craftsmanship for a perfect fit.

    Pros 👍

    • Timeless, high-end style: Clean lines and classic details signal custom quality.

    • Solid and durable: You get the same sturdy, reinforced feel as standard framed cabinets.

    • Smooth front surface: Doors don’t protrude—great for tighter walkways.

    • Showcase hardware: Looks fantastic with traditional butt hinges and classic knobs/pulls.

    Cons 👎

    • Highest price point: The precision and labor drive cost up.

    • Slightly less space: The frame and inset doors reduce opening size and a bit of interior depth.
